Kovachy, 89, well-known community leader Judge Julius M. Kovachy was a distinguished jurist here who served 36 years on the bench before his retirement in 1966. He was a judge in the municipal, common pleas and appellate courts. Before that, he was city chemist and chief police prosecutor. Mr.

Kovachy was widely known as a community leader, but much less well known was his continuing Kovachy interest in chemistry throughout his juristic career. He always had a home laboratory in which he worked and developed and held the patent on a special cleaner for stone manufactured here and used internationally. Mr. Kovachy, 89, died Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital in Tryon, N.C., where he had been a patient since Nov.

21. Death was attributed to kidney failure. He had moved to Tryon after he retired. was brought to "the United States when he was a year old by his father, a minister of the Hungarian Reformed Church and a member of the Hungarian Parliament. attended schools in South Chicago and Wallingford, and Central High School here.

In 1917, he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked in the research department of Westinghouse Lamp Bloomfield, N.J., from 1917 to 1919 when he returned to Cleveland to work for Chemical Co. Mr. Kovachy entered Baldwin-Wallace College and received a bachelor of law degree, cum laude, from Cleveland Law School in 1922. He worked while he was going to school and was city chemist from 1921 to 1923.

For the next four years, he was assistant Cleveland prosecutor and was named chief police prosecutor in 1927. He received a master of laws degree in 1927 from Cleveland Marshall Law School He was first elected municipal judge in 1930 and served 15 years, followed by seven years as a common pleas judge. "In 1952, he was elected to the Ohio Court of Appeals (8th District). In turn he was presiding judge and became highly respected throughout the Mr. Kovachy was a frequent speaker at service clubs and civic events, in addition to his work as president of the Cleveland Church Federation.

A In: 1947, in a speech to the Brooklyn Kiwanis Club, he called for establishment of a project "on just as grand a scale as the one that solved the problem of atomic energy. Pas Lillian Lieberman Martin Lillian Lieberman Martin taught French and English in Cleveland public schools from 1941 to 1952. She had been assigned to Nathan Hale Junior High school as a full-time teacher: and substituted at a number of other schools, including John Marshall and Glenville high schools.She later was a substitute teacher in Painesville. Mrs. Martin, 62, of Painesville, died Sunday at Lake County Memorial Hospital.

East (Painesville). She became ill a at home and was taken to the emergency room when she apparently suffered a heart attack. Cause of death is to be determined. Mrs. Martin received a bachelor's degree in languages in 1941 from Cleveland College and a master's degree in 1943 from Western Reserve University.

He envisioned in many fields, with hundreds of researchers, who would delve into whatever knowledge there is about human relations through the centuries. The product he developed to clean various types. of surfaces, including limestone, granite, marble, concrete and brick, took him 35 years to perfect, said E.C. Bleick, president of Chamical Co.

which manufactures the product. Bleick recalled that the first building to be cleaned with the formula was Wade Memorial Chapel at Lake View Cemetery in 1956. Mr. Kovachy would mix up a batch each night in his lab at home and drop it off the next morning on his way to his work as a judge. Maintenance men would use it all to clean during the day.

Bleick said the National Amphitheater in Washington, D.C., and various art museums in the country been cleaned with the product. Mrs. Kovachy said the Plaza Hotel in New York and Independence Hall in Philadelphia were cleaned with 'the product. She said her husband held the patent for several countries. Mr.

Kovachy was a director of the Cleveland: Church Federation, vice president of the Greater Cleveland Safety Council' and a trustee of the Cultural Gardens Federation. He was a director of the Nationalities Services, president of the Hungarian Cultural Garden Association, president of the University of Pennsylvania Club of Cleveland, secretary of the University Club and regional vice president of the Associated University of Pennsylvania Clubs of America. In 1955, Delta Theta Phi law fraternity conferred life membership on him. Mr. Kovachy was president of the Magyar Club, a trustee of East End Neighborhood House and on the local committee of American Museum of Immigration.

He was a Mason and belonged to the Al Koran Shrine, the Scottish Rite and the Al Sirat Grotto. He was a member of the Cleveland, county and state bar associations. Mr. Kovachy was a member of the First Hungarian Reformed Church and the Church of the Covenant. In addition to his wife, Julia he is survived by a daughter, Juliana Durant; step-daughters Fleur Laslocky and Joanne Van Wyck; five grandchildren and a brother, Edward M.

Kovachy. Private memorial services will be tomorrow in Tryon. John K. Coan John K. Coan, former Shaker Heights resident, was graduated last year from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery i in Des Moines, Iowa.

He completed his internship at Brentwood Hospital here in June and moved to Waterville, Maine, in August to complete his residency at the Waterville Osetopathic Hospital. Dr. Coan, 27, was killed Saturday night in Augusta, Maine, when a car struck his car broadside at an intersection. He had spent Thanksgiving at his home here and flew back to Boston where he picked up his own car for the drive back to Waterville. He was graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1973 and had lettered in soccer his junior year.
