Before that, he was city chemist and chief police prosecutor. Mr. Kovachy was widely known as leader, but much less well known was his continuing a Kovachy interest in chemistry throughout his juristic career.

He always had a home laboratory in which he worked and developed and held the patent on a special cleaner for stone manufactured here and used internationally. Mr. Kovachy, 89, died Saturday at St. Luke's Hospital in Tryon, N.C., where he had been a patient since Nov. 21.

Death was attributed to kidney failure. He had moved to Tryon after he retired. He was brought to the United States when he was a year old by his father, a minister of the Hungarian Reformed Church and a member of the Hungarian Parliament. He attended schools in South Chicago and Wallingford, and Central High School here. In 1917, he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania.

He received a master of laws degree in 1927 from Cleveland Marshall Law School. He was first elected municipal judge in 1930 and served 15 years, followed by seven years as a common pleas judge. In 1952, he was elected to the Ohio Court of Appeals (8th District). In turn he was presiding judge and became highly respected throughout the state. Mr.
