transactions with me are STRICTLY CONIDENTIAL Dlaym or eWhisky The avourite SPORTING SHOTS By Whalebone The racing held at Noarlunga on Saturday was of a very mixed de scription and the pleasure of the sport was greatly marred by an un usual display of inconsistent running unsatisfactory perfor mance in the Noarlunga Handicap together with the subsequent carpet ing of Mr Ramsay put a damper over the proceedings and the remarkable change of form shown by Herod within a few days was also commented upon The disqualification of the brilliant but unfortunate Handover at the Morphettville Autumn Meeting of is fresh in the recollection of turfites and now but a few months after the expiry of his term of two banishment and just when he had been got into condition the horse has been disqualified for six months his trainer (J Smith) for a similar period and agg the rider for three months for suspicious running That the performance was highly suspicious is beyond doubt and the failure of the party to satisfactorily substantiate their state ment that they had backed him to win made the case seem mdre glaring form at the last ARC Meeting was of a very high order and though he had to carry 9 st in the Noarlunga Handicap and the distance was considered a bit too far for him his exhibition was too bad to be true Had the horse run a waiting race and been fairly adjacent to Corio the winner instead of being the bad last he was the trouble may not have occurred but to take him to the front from the fall of the flag and force the running till he was within a couple of furlongs of home caused an uncom fortable impression particularly when it was claimed as an excuse that he was a non stayer The case has many peculiar features and not the least of them are the degrees of punishment meted out to the rider and trainer and the escape of Mr Ramsay who claimed ownership of the horse from a similar penalty to that inflicted upon those connected with him in the management of Hand over for the race Mr Ramsay has appealed to the SAJC against the disqualification and perhaps that which is incompre hensible at present may be made' clear at the hearing of the case to day good form on the Old Course against Strike was not for gotten by the public and he was strongly in demand for the Hurdle Race at 6 to 4 on Many knowing ones thought Sir Patrick a good thing but they had miscalculated as nothing in the field gave Simulator much trouble and he won easily from Pearl Kingbolt was made favorite for the Plate but the public had entirely overlooked Herod who had run very badly in the Licensed Vic Handicap on the previous Saturday and the fancy was van quished by the son of The Vagabond with ease Mr Lord had a little surprise for the Selling Race in the shape of a useful half brother to Ruby the well known Steeplechaser named Pearl who beat his field comfortably after previously running second to Simu lator Corio won the Noarlunga Handicap from Cloch na Bien and the race needs no further comment other than that Handover was the favorite at evens The racing was con cluded by Herod appropriating the lying Handicap from Seabreeze and thus achieving a double victory during the day Norwood was a contestant in this event but he was far from well and could get no nearer than third When this son of Richmond is cherry ripe he will render a good account of himself or I am mistaken Among the sporting community the one absorbing topic of conversation during the past few days has been the Noarlunga episode Many and diverse have been the views expressed upon the subject but they one and all have drifted into the same decision of mind at the end and it is that if racing is to prosper or even live a healthy life dishonest practices of the turf more prevalent now than ever must be put an end What a cry What a pointed criterion of public feeling and if these sentiments of the number of people I have come in contact with be those of the great majority no longer do I wonder at the absence from our race meetings of the thou sands who from their fondness for the thoroughbred one would reasonably expect to be present That crooked running and nefarious practices are every meeting occurences here as well as in the other colonies I freely admit but the sweeping charges I have read and recently heard that there are more non triers than triers running in every race is I am certain erroneous and at the same time very injurious to the best in terests of the sport These are but the ignorant opinions of a few pessi mists and not I am sure of the dis criminating and reasonable members of the public Probably stiff running is more frequent now than it was some years ago as there is evidence which tends to establish the contention and in addition it is recognised by the most experienced that it is much more artistically carried out than in the past The exaggeration of the evil however has a baneful influence though it serves one good purpose in demonstrating how greatly the popu larity of racing is endangered by the existence of this canker of the turf Ask an erstwhile frequenter of the racecourse why he has given up his former pleasure and two to one he will tell you that he found the game too costly owing to his constant losses Just here is where we have the fountain head of the trouble It is the public who supply the where withal to keep racing going and though they will metaphorically speaking stand having their veins emptied it is only the fatuous gambler who will allow his arteries to be pumped dry Winners are difficult enough to pick without adding roguery to the task as the field is against the backer More over not one in twenty of the general run of racegoers know a well con ditioned horse from an unfit one and it is here where the public may lose with little or no chance to win with out an owner breaking racing law as he who backs such a horse with his eyes open drops his money fairly and squarely It is the roping it is the Armstrong influence which is the main cause of complaint and this can and must be done away with if the sport is to fldurish Compel a jockey through the proper channel to ride honestly and I do not think I am wide of the mark in saying that the public will be prepared to risk the remainder of the odds Then racing will be pregnant of more interest and excitement Stud masters will no longer complain that their most promising stock are running for stiff stables and there still will be a profit for the owner jockey club and bookmaker Why is it that compact fields and close finishes are less frequent now than in the past 1 It is not due to the handicapping for Mr Hughes is to day a far more experienced handi capper than he was more than a decade ago and taking everything.
