The Italian will become the world No 1 after Roland Garros and could keep alive dreams of a calendar slam after
triumphing at this year’s Australian Open.
Sinner and Alcaraz resume what promises to be an epic rivalry for years to come, with the current score standing
at four wins each. The Spaniard, heralded as the heir to Rafael Nadal, is still to break through on the clay in
Paris, despite victories at the US Open and Wimbledon.
Later today, Alexander Zverev battles Casper Ruud in the second men’s semi-final, with the Norwegian back on
court after being given a walkover due to Novak Djokovic withdrawing through injury.
Earlier on Friday, Zverev reached an out-of-court settlement with his former girlfriend, who accused the German
tennis star of strangling her during an argument in May 2020.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner: Prepare to be entertained
The next big rivalry in tennis has become the rivalry: which, in part, is owed to how entertaining their encounters
have been. The head-to-head is evenly poised with four wins each - Alcaraz won their last meeting in the Indian
Wells semi-finals, when he ended Sinner’s 19-match streak – but it is as if Alcaraz and Sinner’s styles have been
made for each other. Take last season’s ATP point of the year in the Miami semi-finals: both players stretching
the court to its limits, yet still finding new angles.
Novak Djokovic announced on Thursday that he has had surgery on the meniscus tear that put him out of the
French Open, all but ruling him out of Wimbledon, which begins on July 1.
Djokovic played through his fourth-round match against Francisco Cerundolo, but withdrew from his
quarterfinal against Casper Ruud the next day. Djokovic confirmed on Thursday that his surgery had gone well
and he would do his best to return to action as soon as possible.
What does it mean for the tournament and tennis more generally?
Well, it means there will be a new winner of this event for the first time since 2016, and a new ATP Tour world
No 1, with Jannik Sinner guaranteed to take that spot on Monday.

Ahead of the two showpiece men's singles semifinals today, let's look at what happened in the previous round.
Perhaps surprisingly, every quarterfinal was wrapped up in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz (3) beat Stefanos Tsitsipas (9), 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4.
Jannik Sinner (2) beat Grigor Dimitrov (10), 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Alexander Zverev (4) beat Alex de Minaur (11), 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Then came the biggest news of the round - possibly the tournament - as top seed Novak Djokovic withdrew from

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek advanced to her third consecutive French Open women's singles final with a 6-2, 6-4
win over Coco Gauff on Thursday. On Saturday, Swiatek will be taking on Jasmine Paolini, who will be playing
in her first-ever Grand Slam final, for the French Open title.
Swiatek has won 18 consecutive clay matches and is on 20-match winning streak at Roland Garros since 2022.
As she chases a three-peat, the 23-year-old from Poland becomes just the third woman to make it this far in the
French Open in three straight years, joining Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova.
Meanwhile, this has been a breakout season for Paolini, a 28-year-old Italian. Paolini had never made it past the
second round in a major before this year, but she was ready for the moment when she collected a 6-3, 6-1 win
over Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals. Paolini will be making her debut in the WTA top 10 next week and is set
to be at least No. 7.
Swiatek and Paolini have faced each other twice, with the Polish star leading the series 2-0. They have not met
since the first round of the 2022 US Open, a match Swiatek won 6-3, 6-0.
On the men's side, Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury, and that means he won't
be getting his 25th major title yet and will also lose his world No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner. The 22-year-old
Sinner won his first Grand Slam title earlier this year at the Australian Open, and he will become the first Italian
man to be world No. 1.
"It's for sure not the way I wanted to become No. 1, with Novak retiring, but in another way, the last period I've
played some really good tennis and I'm happy to be in the position," Sinner said. "It's something new coming up
for me and something good, so I'm very happy."
Sinner was dealing with a hip injury earlier this year, but he has been taking care of business at Roland Garros
and earned a trip to the semifinals after a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Grigor Dimitrov.
This tournament has historically belonged to Rafael Nadal. However, the Spanish legend saw an early exit with a
first-round loss to Alexander Zverev and might have played at Roland Garros for the last time. Spain would not
be left without a star, as 21-year-old Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz has been making a name for himself. He is one
of the favorites to win the French Open, but to make the title game he will have to take down Sinner in Friday's
semifinals.
